To see some fierce predators, head to Crocodile Encounter at 23231 County Road 48. This reptile zoo is home to alligators, crocodiles, snakes, lizards, turtles, tortoises, and monkeys. You can see the alligators and crocodiles devour their dinner right before your eyes. It also offers close-up feeding tours for less dangerous animals, so you can get in on the action and see some animals up close and personal. The zoo is devoted to wildlife and science education and has the largest display of crocodiles in Texas.

Stephen F. Austin-Munson Historical County Park

For a park with history, visit Stephen F. Austin-Munson Historical County Park, located at 41885 Texas State Highway 288. This park honors a famous Texan, Stephen F. Austin, known as the Father of Texas after being given the nickname by early Texan Sam Houston. This park spans 10 acres, with a 76-foot-tall statue of Stephen F. Austin in its center that renowned Texas sculptor David Adickes created.

The park has a visitor and information center with a gift shop, open green space, picnic areas, and a Texas-shaped pond that permits catch-and-release fishing. The park and visitor center are open from Wednesday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Brazoria County Fair Association

Visit the Brazoria County Fair Association at 901 S. Downing Road, the site of a yearly county fair every fall, with a carnival midway, fair food, and vendors selling everything from beaded jewelry and clothing to fudge and so much more. There are also year-round activities held at this location. There’s a rodeo arena where you can see year-round wrangling, barrel racing, and a contest for the crowning of the rodeo queen. It hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including a car and bike show with a swap meet, auctions, and fishing tournaments.

Mammoth Dive Academy

You can study at Mammoth Dive Academy, located at 107 W. Way, Suite 26 in Lake Jackson, to learn how to scuba dive or improve your diving skills. You can take classes in open water to get your entry-level diving certification or advanced open water for advanced divers, including specialty courses like Deep Diver, Underwater Navigation, Advanced Buoyancy, and Equipment Specialist. Its master diver course goes even further, requiring multiple courses and at least 50 dives.

Also available is a rescue diver course, which provides the necessary knowledge and skills to perform dive rescues and administer first aid in the event of a diver emergency. You’ll be able to explore underwater wrecks in all your dives. Mammoth Lake is also great for swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding, and its shores are a lovely spot to have a picnic. Classes typically take place at the dive site on Mammoth Lake at 330 N. Dixie Drive, Building F in Lake Jackson. Diving hours are Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge

For 44,413 acres of natural beauty, take a trip to Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, located at 2022 County Road 227 in Freeport. This breathtaking wilderness refuge has woodlands, prairies, ponds, salt and freshwater marshes, and miles of trails for hiking, biking, or driving. You may spot coyotes, bobcats, otters, and alligators amid diverse plant life and the beauty of unspoiled nature. The refuge is devoted to nature conservation and offers educational programs for all ages.

Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge is also a paradise for birdwatchers, as it’s home to more than 300 different species of birds, including waterfowl like snow geese, neotropical migratory songbirds, roseate spoonbills, and great egrets. The trails are diverse, with the footpaths leading to various habitats for distinct experiences. The pathways also differ in type, including woodland and bayou trails and a boardwalk to an abandoned railroad. The walks aren’t long, and all paths provide relatively flat terrain. Don’t veer off designated paths, however, as alligators and venomous snakes make their homes within the taller grasses.

Fishing is also permitted in the ponds and marshes teeming with fish. You can fish from the banks or by boat, with two boat ramps within the wildlife refuge. The refuge is open to the public every day from sunrise to sunset.

Bates Park

Take advantage of the many amenities at Bates Park, located at 700 Bates Park Road. The park is directly behind the softball fields at the adjacent Dickey Park. Amenities available at the park include:

• A lighted basketball pavilion.
• A playground area.
• Barbecue pits.
• Picnic tables.
• Two rental pavilions.
• An 18-hole disc golf course.
• Restrooms.

Bates Park is open daily from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Officer Cash Memorial Dog Park

If you want to get outside with your pup, head to Officer Cash Memorial Dog Park, located at 535 S. Anderson St. There’s a large open area where you can throw a Frisbee or play catch and fetch with your furry friend. There are separate areas for small and large dogs and a fantastic obstacle course where your dog can play. Pet waste bags and disposal areas are available. The dog park is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day.
